Ready-UP! America

The Ready-UP! program was created by self-reliance/preparedness/sustainable living expert Aton Edwards in Spring 2011 to function as a mechanism that trains the general public in the aforementioned disciplines.  Edwards believed that the government created preparedness programs was not connecting with the public and that something more dynamic was needed to spark interest.

Drawing from his extensive experience in teaching preparedness to large audiences, he designed a program that he knew the public would enjoy.   He then enlisted the aid of several of his colleagues who worked in the same field to join him; including his friends and radio partners on the KISS-FM (now WBLS-FM) popular radio program Open Line.

The creator of the Open Line, Peabody Award winning radio personality Bob Slade, convinced his management to sponsor the event.  His partners two-time Grammy Award winning composer/musician and activist James M’tume, former Federal Judge and Garden State Association of Black Journalists award winner Bob Pickett also believed in the idea and, the first presentation was at St. Francis College on July 8th 2011.

It featured the program hosts, along with the participants:  Bedford Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corp director Rocky Robinson and members of his organization.  Representatives of the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Riverkeeper, and several other similar groups and organizations were also in attendance.

The event was a smash success.  It was due to   Sadly on August 13th 2011, Edwards mother, Doris succumbed to a stroke.

His mothers death combined with other family responsibilities forced Edwards to discontinue activities with the Ready-UP! program for several months.

He along with his friends and colleagues began to reactivate the program in late 2012, holding Ready-UP! workshops called “Escape From The Grid.”   As they gained popularity, his group began to plan their next large forum corresponding television program and fundraiser, all slated to begin in the summer of 2013.

The upcoming main event is titled  “Ready-UP! America”  It will be held at a large capacity New York area venue. For the main live presentation, The Open Line radio show team will return along with most of the original participants & organizations.  The target date for the kickoff program will be Saturday, June 1st – the beginning of Hurricane season.

Ready-UP! Events will continue through the summer and ending with a gala event in September, 2013.

Emergency Transportation

When the going gets really tough, you may need emergency transportation.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you are forced to evacuate your home, workplace or wherever you may find yourself because of a disaster or emergency; you may not be able to use your automobile.  Disasters and other emergencies often produce severe damage to buildings, bridges and roads that can make travel difficult and in many cases impossible.

Traffic Jam

Emergency evacuations clog traffic.

It may sometimes be necessary to utilize other forms of transportation to move safely and swiftly to safe areas.   If you have a short distance to cover to move to a safe area, walking is probably your best and most effective option.

Walking from disasters

Walking to escape disaster

However, if you need to travel longer distances, you will need a safe, tested and reliable form of transportation that you can use to move out of harm’s way quickly.   On land, there is nothing more effective than the bicycle.

Montague Paratrooper Bike

The bicycle pictured above is called the Montague Paratrooper.

This bike was originally developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for a light human powered infantry vehicle. The Montague bike is currently in use by the US Marines, Army and police departments across the United States. It is a full-size and folds. It can be easily packed inside of an automobile trunk, or slung over your shoulder and carried in its own bag!

(see video below)

A durable folding bike like the Montague Paratrooper is better than a fixed frame due to its light weight & portability.   Smaller folders are great also but cannot handle the heavy loads that a full-size model can.

To make your emergency bicycle even more reliable, purchase “run flat” or “puncture-proof” tires.Britek Tires of Colorado will be marketing a new puncture proof tire soon.

There are many companies that make puncture resistant tires that you can look up on the internet.

Outside of bicycles, the only other reliable form of human transportation for land is something that can only be used by highly skilled and fit individuals.  It is called an “all terrain roller skate.”

If you are an experienced roller skater and are physically fit enough to use them, this is another great option for emergency travel.  Outside of a muddy road and sand, these skates can move across most surfaces.

Hurricane Sandy “Superstorm” Preparedness Tips

IPN Emergency Transportation Systems

When the going gets really tough, get going with these IPN approved emergency transportation systems

Disasters and other emergencies often produce severe damage to buildings, bridges and roads that can make travel in normal vehicles difficult and in many cases impossible.  It may sometimes be necessary to utilize unorthodox specially designed vehicles to move safely and swiftly to safe areas.  This is why the IPN has created this section to feature and review the top emergency transportation systems designed for land, sea and air.

Emergency Food/Water Supply Basics

Water & Food Storage

Emergency Water & Food Storage

When disasters strike, you must have an emergency food and water supply in your home/automobile and even a small supply at your workplace/business.

In many cases during large-scale emergencies or disasters, food will disappear from supermarket shelves and deliveries will be disrupted and scarce.

Water treatment facilities may also cease to function due to power outages (blackouts) or damages produced by the disaster.

Your tap water may not be safe to drink.  In the case of a radiological emergency, even boiling will not sufficiently clean your water and render it safe for consumption.  If you don’t have an emergency water supply, you may be forced to either consume contaminated water.   This could produce severe almost immediate illness or future diseases.

Proper food, nutrition and water are your first line of defense for your health when disasters or, other emergencies strike!

The I.P.N. strongly recommends that every home must have an emergency food and water supply that can provide all of the occupants with a minimum of two weeks of water and food.

We would prefer a month, however we understand that in our shaky economy many people don’t have the resources to purchase a months worth of supplies.  Two weeks is better than one, or none.

It’s important to add that an emergency food supply is great to have during an economic crisis.  When money isn’t available to purchase food, it is wise to have emergency food stored away.

When choosing emergency food, you must consider the following factors:

1. Nutritional Value.  During disasters, your body is subjected to high levels of stress.  The food that you eat during this difficult period must be very nutritious and, provide your body with the extra energy it needs to perform the many strenuous tasks that disasters and emergencies almost always manifest.  Good health is by far, your most indispensable commodity — and, is the foundation that your entire life rests upon during turbulent times.

2. Shelf life – You must know how long your food can be stored.  You must also consider what the ideal temperature and location for storage is along with the durability of the package it is contained in.

3. Taste – Your storage food should be of a type that you enjoy.

4. Value – You should select a food that has the highest nutritional value, longest shelf life, best taste for the lowest price.

The I.P.N.’s selection is Nuvona Premium Foods.

Nuvona Premium Foods

Why?  Over the course of our 23+ years of operation, we’ve tasted pretty much all the top brands of emergency food.  Many are delicious and nutritious, but pound for pound don’t have all the qualities that Nuvona Premium Foods have.

This includes the fact that they use non-genetically modified food (Non-GMO) an only the freshest and best ingredients.

The food is also dehydrated and also freeze dried.  This extends its shelf life.  The packaging is extremely durable, it is relatively inexpensive, offers many varieties including vegetarian meals and, it tastes great.

The CEO of Nuvona Preston Sallenback is also dedicated to providing the public with the highest quality product.

He states “When emergencies happen and stress is at an all time high, food will be one of the first things on your mind and one of the highest priorities, but where are you going to find it?

Are you going to be like the rest of the people in your area and rely on someone else like FEMA or some other governmental agency to come to your rescue? If so, I’d reconsider that idea because it isn’t going to happen.

Having just witnessed the chaos shortly after Hurricane Sandy leads us to believe we must be self-reliant and not dependent on anyone but ourselves, but that would take some planning ahead and did all the homework for you and found the best solution out there, Nuvona Premium Foods.

What sets Nuvona apart from all the others is their premium quality non-GMO ingredients and true gourmet tastes not to mention the fact that they’re simple to prepare!  Just add water!  Nuvona foods also have a 25+ year shelf life, no MSG, no trans fats, no cholesterol, low in sodium, low in fat, high calorie & fiber meals that use Sea Salt and come in both Gluten Free and Vegetarian varieties.”

I.P.N. Ikhaya-Eco Human Shelter Initiative

Ultra Low Cost Home Project

I.P.N. Human Shelter Initiative

No matter where you are or who you are, the I.P.N. believes that safe shelter is  a human right for all who live on our planet.   With the technological tools and techniques available to us today, there is no excuse for anyone, anywhere to be without a home.

In addition,  it should be inexpensive,  highly resistant to hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and many other natural and technological disasters; and manufactured from recycled waste products or locally available material such as the Cal-Earth “Superadobe” home pictured below.

Superadobe Homes Superadobe Homes

The I.P.N. Ikhaya Eco Human Shelter Initiative (formerly LIfe-O.N.E.) was created to provide the public with information about how to build the most innovative, inexpensive, “green” disaster resistant temporary, portable and permanent homes. Ikhaya-Eco will also introduce its own creations ranging from emergency shelters to portable mini-homes.

Haven Emergency Shelter

These structures can be used as emergency shelters after disasters strike, low cost urban and rural housing, shelter for the rapidly growing homeless population in the USA along with impoverished communities in developing nations across the globe.   The Ikhaya-Eco program will place an emphasis on the use of locally available resources and materials to reduce the environmental impact of construction.  This includes the use of waste material such as scrap metal, plastic, old tires, wood etc. reconfigured into disaster-resistant structures that can serve as temporary or in many cases permanent shelter.  These homes, designed by I.P.N. Executive Director Aton Edwards (and other contributors to the initiative) are also created to serve as what Edwards deems as “ultra low cost homes.” (ULCH) His designs can be built with unskilled labor and range in price from $600 to 12,000 dollars.   (plumbing, electric & furniture not included) Many can be disassembled and moved from location to location.  Others can be towed by human power (walking, bicycle, handcart) or even carried in a backpack.

Edwards designed the devices to in his words “provide the world’s poorest with the means to protect themselves from the elements and live in dignity.”   He adds — “given the volatile state of the American and global economy combined with several other factors, the problem of homelessness will continue to grow.  In some cases exponentially. The solutions to this will be the development of practical, non traditional emergency and permanent shelters that are available to all who need them.”

“The need for methods of providing shelter for millions around the world who lack it must be fulfilled or this tragic situation will continue to grow.”  The video below describes the Hexayurt, an emergency shelter invented by Vinay Gupta.

The Hexayurt is one of the Ikhaya Eco’s recommended emergency shelter designs.

Geodesic domes are another of the recommended emergency & permanent shelter designs. In terms of simplicity, cost, disaster resistance, construction time, they rank as one of the top, most practical, cost-effective and simple solutions to the emergency-housing crisis around the world.

In summary these are structures created by Walther Bauersfeld chief engineer of the Carl Zeiss & perfected by the late great scientist/mathematician/architect R. Buckminster Fuller.

  • Geodesic domes are not only easy and inexpensive to construct, but they are also incredibly disaster resistant.
  • Their geometric configuration transfers all loads (weight) equally across the entire shape giving them tremendous strength.   Most available today can withstand the strongest hurricane, and even powerful earthquakes.

A number of companies manufacture kits that allow for the rapid construction of these domes. One of the best is Pacific Domes.

Intershelter  offers a revolutionary hard shell dome that can be constructed in less than a day!

There are many other innovative and practical designs that Ikhaya-Eco will utilize to present all in need around the world with affordable ultra-low-cost, practical, disaster resistant and environmentally friendly shelter.
