Over the years, I’ve had the incredible opportunity\u00a0to work with some wonderful\u00a0folk from the entertainment industry that have been supportive in helping to spread our message of disaster preparedness\/response & sustainable living. \u00a0Of all that I have met and known, Davina Bussey<\/a><\/strong> stands out as one of the biggest talents. \u00a0She is also a longtime preparedness advocate and practitioner who has been a member of I.P.N. since the late 90’s well before the global prepping craze began.<\/p>\n

Besides being an award winning singer, composer<\/a>, arranger and recording engineer, she is also an organic gardener, and environmental activist that has infused all of this into her music.<\/p>\n

Back in the late spring of 2014, I had a conversation with Davina about how to make preparedness more attractive to\u00a0the African-American community.<\/p>\n

For the most part, we discussed how local and federal programs created to raise awareness and promote\u00a0disaster preparedness have had little to no<\/em> effect at all on the public. \u00a0Literally millions of dollars spent to create\u00a0advertising campaigns that are clever —<\/em> but, in reality do nothing<\/em> other than\u00a0to employ advertising executives, photographers, graphic artists and models that they use in the ads.<\/p>\n

Nobody is really paying attention — and this is especially true in inner city communities.<\/em> \u00a0Speaking frankly, the only disasters that most folks who live in these areas are worried about these days are crime, unemployment and, as we have seen most recently with the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases and protests, police brutality.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sadly, when disasters do<\/em> strike, it is the residents of these areas that are in the most need of preparedness\u00a0as they are highly vulnerable to disasters when they strike; due to several factors including their locations. \u00a0Many live in low lying areas near rivers, lakes and the ocean,\u00a0old poorly maintained homes, \u00a0industrial areas etc. \u00a0Most have no vehicles to escape disasters or, don’t have finances to purchase preparedness gear and supplies. \u00a0Or gas — if they have a car.<\/p>\n

That’s the reality.<\/p>\n

Another big reason why\u00a0the message doesn’t resonate\u00a0with us is that after Katrina, black folk – and I’d say at this point most<\/em> Americans have very little (if any) confidence in F.E.M.A. (Federal Emergency Management Agency) despite their efforts to improve themselves. \u00a0 It’s not like F.E.M.A. has helped to dispel these feelings as anyone in the New York City area that suffered from the impact of Hurricane Sandy will tell you.<\/a>\u00a0 Many are still wrestling with F.E.M.A. for aid and assistance that will almost certainly never come.<\/p>\n

In the final analysis, \u00a0their “urban” outreach programs \u00a0(urban is a codeword for black, latino) have fallen far short of their mark – to say the least. \u00a0<\/em>The C.E.R.T. program (Community Emergency Response Training) has fared a little but better, but not nearly<\/em> enough to make a significant difference.<\/p>\n

Something else is\u00a0needed to reach this community — \u00a0and we knew exactly what it is<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Plain and simple … it’s\u00a0soul. \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

A standardized and otherwise bland approach won’t work with us.<\/em><\/p>\n

We may be American by culture and location but the drums of mother Africa still beat in our hearts.<\/p>\n

You hear it in our music — in the way we walk, talk, play sports, dance <\/a>,\u00a0pretty much everything we do is infused with that special spark that we call soul. \u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

We both agreed that if you’re going to reach black folk with a\u00a0message<\/em>, they need to be moved<\/em> emotionally by it. \u00a0 \u00a0Even I’m guilty of ignoring this fact. \u00a0<\/em> For the most part, when I appear on TV or do radio spots, my approach to the subject has been pretty straightforward and I guess you could say … rather\u00a0bland.<\/em> \u00a0 That style is great for a newscaster, but it won’t motivate us to do anything other than either ignoring what I say, or<\/em> … just switching the channel.<\/em><\/p>\n

I’ve always known that reaching my folks\u00a0requires a\u00a0much different approach — but I just didn’t want to do it!<\/em>\u00a0 Black folks are accustomed to a far more energetic and soulful<\/em> style of speaking — the kind you see in a church! \u00a0I know how to speak<\/em> like a preacher,\u00a0but if I tried it on national TV, <\/a>you could bet that I’d be quickly be escorted to the exit.<\/p>\n

Since that<\/em> option isn’t open to me, the only other pathway to our hearts is music. \u00a0There is no way to understate its value to us.<\/em><\/p>\n

Our music has helped us to endure the many struggles we have encountered since our ancestors arrived on these shores.<\/p>\n

Davina and I knew that it\u00a0can play a very\u00a0<\/em>critical role in helping to get it across\u00a0and\u00a0nothing<\/em> would work better to reach the masses than hip-hop.<\/em><\/p>\n

I’ve had this same conversation with many of hip-hop’s most prominent artists and proponents including Chuck-D, Afrika Bambaataa,<\/a> Ernie Paniccioli<\/a><\/strong> and, many others. \u00a0Jumel<\/strong> Redd Omegga Dillard<\/strong>, an I.P.N. founding member and hip-hop artist who actually wrote a theme for I.P.N. called “The Day The Earth Died”<\/strong> – a song written in 1999 about an attack on the World Trade Center.<\/p>\n

I can tell you that Chuck, Bambaataa, Immortal Technique and many others in the industry that I’ve spoken with about the subject feel the same way that Davina and I do about this subject. \u00a0They know that we need to prepare for disasters, but don’t know exactly how to tackle the subject.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0few such as\u00a0KRS-1<\/strong>\u00a0and the Public Enemy have actually produced disaster preparedness related music such as KRS-1’s\u00a0Disaster Kit, <\/a><\/strong>or the Public Enemy’s\u00a0“Get Your S%#t Together”\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s powerful\u00a0material, but unfortunately, they\u00a0no longer receive the media attention needed to help spark trends. \u00a0 If Jay-Z, Kanye, or Nicki Minaj dropped a hot song or an album about disaster preparedness,\u00a0I can guarantee that it would become the next new craze. \u00a0Flashlights and multi-tools\u00a0may not replace Air Jordan’s but they would almost certainly become far more popular, and a fashion accessory. \u00a0They also go well with Timberlands<\/p>\n

I know that the community wants the information. \u00a0It’s really about how<\/em>\u00a0 it’s delivered and who<\/em> they get it from.<\/p>\n

All that is needed is something that can help light the fuse that will set it all off.<\/p>\n

I knew that to begin, We needed to modify the practice into something that would immediately resonate with us. \u00a0 Davina began to brainstorm and create new songs that specifically speak to preparedness and its importance to our community. \u00a0One of the first is called Ready-UP! \u00a0featuring\u00a0OG\u00a0Smokeahontas.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Davina is also speaking with a number of her peers in the music world to help motivate them to create similar material. \u00a0 I am also speaking with several movers and shakers in the hip-hop industry, radio, film and television about developing related projects.<\/p>\n

I’ve also reached out to many of my associate and colleagues\u00a0within the world of preparedness across the nation to help create a new form of disaster preparedness — called SoulPrepping<\/strong>. \u00a0In short, SoulPrepping is more holistic than the standard practice. \u00a0 It’s also more of a culture than a practice – just like hip-hop!<\/em><\/p>\n

SoulPreppaz<\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0individuals that are\u00a0dedicated to not only\u00a0preparing themselves<\/em> for emergencies, but also their churches, schools, businesses & community. Soul Preppaz also practice sustainable living<\/em> — to help preserve Mother Earth for future generations.<\/p>\n

A special emphasis is placed on gardening, such as the Guerilla Gardening pioneer\u00a0Ron Finley in Los Angeles<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Finley days that “growing your own food is like growing money”<\/em>\u00a0and plants gardens all across Los Angeles – alongside highways, in abandoned lots, curb sides or anywhere vegetation can grow. \u00a0 He envisions a world where as he says “gardening is gangsta” and poor communities across the nation can enjoy fresh produce. \u00a0 This is a major principal in SoulPrepping. \u00a0Work like his and another gardening pioneer, Will Allen <\/a>of Growing Power<\/a><\/p>\n

Allen and Growing Power, located in Milwaukee is an agricultural organization dedicated to the development of sustainable community food production systems. \u00a0SoulPrepping or, “EcoSoular” prepping for renewable energy power generation systems and alternative eco-friendly (green) low cost and disaster resistant homebuilding, along with local and national environmental activism balances off the sustainable living component.<\/p>\n

Health and fitness<\/strong> is another major part\u00a0of SoulPrepping<\/strong>. \u00a0 The African-American community suffers from diabetes, asthma, cancer, hypertension and other diseases that diet and exercise can help to diminish and in some cases completely eliminate.<\/p>\n

All SoulPreppaz must conform to a dietary and nutritional protocol that helps to maximize and maintain their health fitness and\u00a0well being.<\/p>\n

Self-defense is a major part\u00a0of the SoulPreppaz program. \u00a0America’s inner cities have high crime rates that expose many of the residents to\u00a0violence. \u00a0 A SoulPreppa must know how to protect themselves and their family from violent crime.<\/p>\n

Finally, all SoulPreppaz must strive to become self-reliant! \u00a0 We must learn to as Marcus Garvey once said Do For Self – in fact, all SoulPreppaz are truly “DoForSelfers” who will learn that it will not only prepare them for disasters but also, improve their quality of life.<\/p>\n

This is the goal that we have set to achieve for 2015 – to build a national collective of African-American SoulPreppaz who are ready to deal with any disaster or emergency. \u00a0Take our pledge and join us!<\/p>\n
