Human Shelter Initiative<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>No matter <em>where<\/em> you are or <em>who<\/em> you are, the I.P.N. believes that safe shelter is\u00a0 a <em><strong>human right<\/strong> <\/em>for <em>all who live on our planet.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 With the technological tools and techniques available to us today, there is no excuse for <em>anyone, anywhere<\/em> to be without a home.<\/p>\n<p>In addition,\u00a0 it should be <em>inexpensive,<\/em>\u00a0 highly resistant to <strong>hurricanes, floods, tornadoes<\/strong> and many other <strong>natural<\/strong> and technological disasters; and manufactured from recycled waste products or locally available material such as the Cal-Earth &#8220;Superadobe&#8221; home pictured below.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_605\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-605\" style=\"width: 262px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/calearth.org\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-605 \" src=\"https:\/\/readyforanything.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/images-2.jpg\" alt=\"Superadobe Homes\" width=\"262\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cal-Earth.org Superadobe Homes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <strong>I.P.N. Ikhaya Eco Human Shelter Initiative <\/strong>(formerly LIfe-O.N.E.) was created to provide the public with information about how to build the most innovative, inexpensive, &#8220;green&#8221; disaster resistant temporary, portable and permanent homes. Ikhaya-Eco will also introduce its own creations ranging from <a title=\"Emergency Shelters\" href=\"http:\/\/weburbanist.com\/2008\/11\/12\/lifesaving-temporary-emergency-shelters-buildings\/\">emergency shelters <\/a>to <a title=\"Emergency Shelters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecofriend.com\/haven-solar-powered-emergency-shelters-can-be-stacked-for-easy-transport.html\">portable mini-homes.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_606\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-606\" style=\"width: 446px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecofriend.com\/haven-solar-powered-emergency-shelters-can-be-stacked-for-easy-transport.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-606 \" src=\"https:\/\/readyforanything.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/haven-emergency-shelters_3_AQwMg_69.jpg\" alt=\"haven-emergency-shelters_3_AQwMg_69\" width=\"446\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readyforanything.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/haven-emergency-shelters_3_AQwMg_69.jpg 550w, https:\/\/readyforanything.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/haven-emergency-shelters_3_AQwMg_69-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-606\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Haven Emergency Shelter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These structures can be used as emergency shelters after disasters strike, low cost urban and rural housing, shelter for the rapidly growing homeless population in the USA along with impoverished communities in developing nations across the globe. \u00a0 The Ikhaya-Eco program will place an emphasis on the use of locally available resources and materials to reduce the environmental impact of construction.\u00a0 This includes the use of waste material such as scrap metal, plastic, old tires, wood etc. reconfigured into disaster-resistant structures that can serve as temporary or in many cases permanent shelter.\u00a0 These homes, designed by I.P.N. Executive Director Aton Edwards (and other contributors to the initiative) are also created to serve as what Edwards deems as<strong> &#8220;ultra low cost homes.&#8221;<\/strong> (ULCH) His designs can be built with unskilled labor and range in price from <strong>$600<\/strong> to <strong>12,000<\/strong> dollars. \u00a0 (plumbing, electric &amp; furniture not included) Many can be disassembled and moved from location to location.\u00a0 Others can be towed by human power (walking, bicycle, handcart) or even carried in a backpack.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards designed the devices to in his words <em>&#8220;provide the world&#8217;s poorest with the means to protect themselves from the elements and live in dignity.&#8221; \u00a0<\/em> He adds &#8212;<em> &#8220;given the volatile state of the American and global economy combined with several other factors, the problem of homelessness will continue to grow.\u00a0 In some cases exponentially. In terms of simplicity, cost, disaster resistance, construction time, they rank as one of the top, most practical, cost-effective and simple solutions to the emergency-housing crisis around the world.<\/p>\n<p>In summary these are structures created by <strong><a title=\"Walther Bauersfeld\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walther_Bauersfeld\">Walther Bauersfeld<\/a><\/strong> chief engineer of the Carl Zeiss &amp; perfected by the late great scientist\/mathematician\/architect <strong><a title=\"Bucky Fuller\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/americanmasters\/episodes\/r-buckminster-fuller\/about-r-buckminster-fuller\/599\/\">R. Buckminster Fuller.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Geodesic domes are not only easy and inexpensive to construct, but they are also <i>incredibly disaster resistant.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/i><\/li>\n<li>Their geometric configuration transfers all loads (weight) equally across the entire shape giving them <i>tremendous strength.\u00a0 <\/i>\u00a0Most available today can withstand the strongest hurricane, and even <i>powerful earthquakes.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A number of companies manufacture kits that allow for the rapid construction of these domes.
